Dear Selection Committee,
It is with great interest that I apply to become a Hearing Resource Teacher in your School District.
Currently, I am enrolled in the last semester to finish my Masters of Education degree in Teaching the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the University of British Columbia. This summer, I am taking the Level B Assessment course and presented my poster “Inspiring Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to Achieve Self-Advocacy” at the International Special Education Conference. Here, I have learned about the critical issues in special education, how to write comprehensive IEPs, how to conduct team-based meetings, and the importance of building and playing on a collaborative team to meet the language, academic, social, and emotional needs of the students. I also have had hands on experience troubleshooting hearing aids, personal and FM systems. I enjoy assessing and designing remediation programs that engage students and keep them learning without realizing they are actually working. Language, literacy and working with students with special needs are a passion for me.
Working in the field of special education has been tremendously rewarding. Since 2004, I have been working with children with special needs in group homes, camps, schools, and even teaching how to ski and snowboard up on the mountains. I have had the opportunity to support children and young adults with autism, learning disabilities, medical, behavioural, social, emotional, physical and mental challenges. In turn, this is a major asset when working in this field as many students with a hearing issue have one or more disabilities. Since 2007, I have worked in the roles as an Educational Assistant, Student Teacher, Teacher On Call, and had two 5 week practicums as Hearing Resource Teacher. I have worked with K-12 and have a strong comprehension of the curriculum. Working in the secondary schools has deepened my understanding of the materials, as I am able to reteach the concepts in a multisensory approach. My work experience and education has given me an expansive set of skills and knowledge as well as a current and fresh perspective.
I am very interested and look forward to meet with you in person to discuss my experience, credentials and my philosophy towards education.
Best regards,
Starr Vickers
