Theories of learning and instruction; principles and practices of diagnosis and assessment as these relate to students with relevant special needs.
EPSE 512: Critical Issues in Special Education
This course is intended to introduce students to a sample of the variety of issues and problems in the field of Special Education. Due to the vast array of topics within the field, it is not possible to cover every type of problem or issue practitioners will encounter; thus, only a small selection of topics are included in this course. The initial part of the course will be devoted to literature that will provide students with a template from which to approach their future readings on. We will attempt to view issues from the perspectives of many of the different stakeholders in special education. Students will also be provided opportunities to peruse an issue or topic that is of particular interest to them.
EPSE 517: Acoustic Environments and Amplification in the Classroom
Consultative and collaborative models for audiologists and educators planning rehabilitation programs for deaf and hard of hearing students. Individual and groups amplification, cochlear implants, and acoustic environments.
EPSE 518: Speech Development of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
This course focuses on the language acquisition and curricular needs of deaf and hard of hearing students. The course content includes such topics as: historical perspective in teaching learners who are deaf and hard of hearing, language development theory and practices used with learners who are deaf and hard of hearing, principles of language instruction, language assessment, factors that contribute to language learning, and heterogeneity of population. The course is based on the view that there are “multiple pathways to learning”.

The effects of hearing loss on development of English language skills; effects of varied linguistic input considered through reference to theories of language acquisition.
EPSE 520: Curriculum Development in the Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
This course will focus on the curricular needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The emphasis will be on intentional intervention across school subjects (e.g., reading, writing, social studies, and math). The process of working from assessment of needs to the identification of goals and objectives for intervention will be examined. Topics to be covered include working with families, assessment, report writing, collaboration with other professionals, program and curricular adaptations/modifications, the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing beyond the core curriculum, specific strategies for supporting and promoting literacy
development. The course context will address curricular needs across settings.
EPSE 521: Social Aspects of Hearing Loss
This course provides students the opportunity to critically explore the impact of childhood hearing loss on social, emotional, and cognitive development, from a psychosocial developmental perspective. In addition, an introduction to the characteristics and needs of deaf and hard of hearing persons with educationally significant disabling conditions will also be provided.
EPSE 522: Developing English Language Programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
This course focuses on the language acquisition and curricular needs of deaf and hard of hearing students. The course content includes such topics as: historical perspective in teaching learners who are deaf and hard of hearing, language development theory and practices used with learners who are deaf and hard of hearing, principles of language instruction, language assessment, factors that contribute to language learning, and heterogeneity of population. The course is based on the view that there are “multiple pathways to learning”.
EPSE 525: Studies in Sign Language
This on-line course is designed to offer participants an introduction to aspects of Deaf culture and community, and issues of language and culture. By exploring the critical elements that comprise culture and community, participants will examine the development of natural signed languages, the creation of signed codes used in educational contexts, and the current issues in signed language research.
EPSE 565A: Audiology for Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the body of knowledge involved in teaching children with various degrees of hearing loss, birth – 21 years of age, to use their residual hearing to support the development of listening skills and to promote successful speech development.
EPSE 565E: Aural Habilitation/ Facilitating Communication in Children with Cochlear Implants
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to meet National Certification standards by demonstrating knowledge and understanding of Audiology. Topics include anatomy and physiology of the ear, etiology of hearing loss, the audiologic test battery, impact of hearing loss, central auditory processing, hearing screening and hearing conservation.

This course consisted of coursework and 2 five week practicums. One was working in the Oral Program at Burnaby South Secondary School and the BC Provincial School for the Deaf with students Grade 8 to 12. The other was as an itinerant Hearing Resource Teacher in the North Vancouver School District working with students Grade K to 12.
